In this podcast, we highlighted cybersecurity awareness among university students, focusing on password security, browser security, and social media activities.1 The researchers surveyed 450 undergraduate and postgraduate students at Imam Abdulrahman Bin Faisal University in Saudi Arabia.
The survey results showed that:
Students have a moderate level of awareness regarding cybersecurity, but their practical implementation of security measures is still lacking.
While students generally understand the importance of strong passwords, they often fail to follow best practices, like changing passwords periodically and using unique passwords for different accounts.
Students exhibit a good understanding of browser security measures like updating regularly and avoiding third-party extensions.
Students demonstrate responsible social media behavior by avoiding sharing personal information excessively and being aware of how to report suspicious activity.
The study concludes that:
Knowledge of password security, browser security, and social media activities significantly influences students' cybersecurity awareness.
Password security is the area where students require the most improvement.
Further efforts are needed to encourage students to adopt better cybersecurity practices in their daily lives.
The authors acknowledge the limitations of the study:
The reliability of the questions could be improved.
The study was limited to three independent variables and did not cover a broader range of cybersecurity topics.
The sample may not be representative of all university students, as it was conducted at a single university and included a majority of female respondents.
They suggest that future research should include:
More variables to better understand the factors affecting cybersecurity awareness.
